The Porto Vecchio citadel was founded in 1539, under the leadership of senators from Genoa. The region was then known as a pirate haven. From 1540 to 1589, the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt three times. The Republic of Genoa finally ceded the island to France in 1768. The marina and commercial port below the ramparts is particularly popular during the high season. You'll find bars, ice cream parlors, and restaurants there, and you can enjoy lovely walks.
