In the southwest of Corsica, Ajaccio, capital of the Isle of Beauty and a City of Art and History, proudly displays its identity. White sandy beaches, shaded squares, colorful markets, and lively café terraces all contribute to an immersion in a Mediterranean atmosphere.
The old town is separated from the other districts by Place de Gaulle, a must-see attraction located near the beach. Adorned with the monument to Napoleon and his brothers, it hosts numerous concerts and events, especially in summer, and in winter it hosts the Christmas market. Ajaccio Cathedral, with its bright orange façade and trompe-l'oeil frescoes, is also a highlight of the old town.
The port is the other vibrant heart of the Corsican capital. Soak up its colors and atmosphere by stopping at a café terrace or tasting one of the island's specialties. Early risers will enjoy the lively fishing scene, while night owls will enjoy the festive evenings.
The city's last asset, and not the least, is its exceptional beaches. Located at the foot of the ramparts of the Genoese citadel, Saint-François Beach, in the city center, offers a superb view of the Bay of Ajaccio. Other beaches, such as Trottel, Terre Sacrée, Ariadne, Ricanto, and many others, are just as welcoming. The sumptuous Gulf of Ajaccio, where the city nestles, stretches from the Pointe de la Parata and its Sanguinaires Islands to Capo di Muro. It is one of the most important gulfs on the island, which is also home to the charming seaside resort of Porticcio on its southern shore.
